spring cleaning, cowgirls, and tequila as a hobby

It’s almost May and I’m in full spring cleaning/getting rid of shit I don’t need mode.

Saturday night involved me, a glass of wine, and the oh-so-familiar game of, “don’t pretend this skirt will ever fit again because you’re a grown ass woman and that shit could barely fit a twelve year old so you might as well sack up and put it in the Salvation Army pile.”

It was a whirlwind of ill-fitting clothing, but in the middle of it I found a small folder of random stuff from my childhood.  Mostly early school work, photos, and drawings.  Oh, and this story:

When I grow up I will either be a teacher or a dentist or maybe even an artist. I think I might even be one of those people on the news or an actress or maybe even a cancan dancer or an ice skater.

In my spare time I will collect stamps.

The end.

On one hand, this seriously makes me miss being a little kid.  I mean, how great would it be to just yell, “THE END” whenever you were finished dealing with someone’s bullshit?  And the wild career aspirations!  There I was, still relying on that ridiculously wide-ruled penmanship instruction paper, and yet I was going to be an ice skating news anchor who moonlighted as an actress.

But on the other hand, I’m all, “Little Nicole, you can barely form your own letters, how do you know what cancan dancing is?  The garters!  The lifting of the skirt!  What are you, five?  HOW SLUTTY ARE YOU??”

little-nicoleI was clearly leaving my options open though, weighing cancan dancing against the many alternatives, such as being a cowgirl.  But, from the looks of it, the cowgirl plan wasn’t going too well.  Maybe my horse was late?  Maybe I was trying to figure out how to balance a future of being an artist with an inability to get past stick figures and finger painting?  Maybe I was frustrated that somebody had had the audacity to pin an orange star to my chest when CLEARLY, orange didn’t match my outfit.  Or maybe I was just terrified that adulthood had nothing better to offer me than the pastime of collecting stamps.

Man, I wish I could go back and assure my younger self that there was no need to worry, because email was coming and there wouldn’t be any stamps to collect.  Oh, and that even if there were, growups are way too busy with hobbies like sex and tequila to peel shit off envelopes and stick it into albums.

That's a ridiculously cute photo. Would I expect anything less?

I play the Salvos game every few months. I'm already scheduled to have a go this week to make room to justify the trendy shit I want to buy. I generally use the rule that I give clothing items one "get out of jail free" card – after that, no matter how cute or how much I want to pretend I'll wear it, it HAS to go. Subsequently, I'm generally a bitch on these days of closet cleansing.

I used to collect stamps… but yes, sex and tequila have gotten in the way of that hobby, saving myself from the permanent tattoo of nerd on my forehead. Not to say that I've escaped said nerd-dom, but the tattoo-ing is in a less viewed place than on my face.

I still want to be an ice skater… Kristi Yamaguchi man, shit.

Ah, so you HAVE been that adorable your whole life! And when I was little I wanted to be a pilot. And a country singer (except… I can't sing and I don't really like country music as much anymore…). Oh, and a dancer and a gymnast.

I am with you on the whole "the end" thing. Seriously. I think I'm going to go back to that.

O. M. G. Childhood pictures are the BEST!! You look exactly the same.

I'm going to try tacking "The End" onto the end of every statement I make this week. The end.

At least you were goal-oriented when you were little! I just wanted to be a mermaid and frolick around the ocean without a care in the world.

You were such a cute little cowgirl!

I sometimes wish I could go back to being a little kid again when I could say 'The End' whenever I wanted and when the most troubling problem I had was when my mother was going to call me inside for dinner. Oh, the drama! But then I think about all the adult things I'd be missing, and I decide it wouldn't be worth it. Because adult hobbies? A lot more fun than kid hobbies.

When I was little, I wanted to be a Hooker.

….Because Julia Roberts was one and she rocked that shit.

Admit it.

I cracked up during this post, like, 3 times. Nice work. I too am in the process of throwing clothes out, and I'm coming to terms with the fact that size 4 was a pre-age-20 phenomenon.

…Only mine was taken, uh, last year. Heh.

Are you sure you can't just fly on out to NYC for this weekend's meetup, lady?

That picture kills me! So adorably expressive! I kind of want to dig out some old childhood photos now! I once found an old worksheet, where i filled in "when I grow up i want to be… 'a mom.'"
And then drew a picture of myself with like 8 children hanging off me. At least you gave yourself options?!
