Now that I’m home from Alt Design Summit, I can safely say two things. One, if you ever have a chance to cheat on your bathtub with the deep & gorgeous bathtubs at The Grand America Hotel, TAKE IT. Two, if one of your 2012 goals is to “Do Uncomfortable Shit,” you actually have to, you know, do uncomfortable shit.
Which is how I found myself in Salt Lake City last week, surrounded by 500+ design-ey bloggers & uber-smart creatives, ready for an inspiration-filled 4-day conference at which I didn’t know a single other person. NOT ONE SINGLE OTHER PERSON. OUT OF OVER 500 PERSONS. THAT’S A LOT OF PERSONS, YOU GUYS.
But here’s my theory: if we don’t force ourselves into scary and uncomfortable situations, we can’t grow. And if we aren’t growing, then what the fuck, right?
So, there I was, in one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed in, with a king suite all to myself, a suitcase that was more than 50% shoes (Whaaat? Go away. Leave me alone. Girls need footwear options when surrounded by 500 unknown persons), and a plan to just start conversations with as many people as possible over the course of the event.
Guess what? EASIER SAID THAN DONE.
Randomly approaching strangers is one of my least favorite things. I’m as outgoing as the next girl, sure, but there’s just something so unnerving about being all, “HI! YOU DON’T KNOW ME. LET’S BE FRIENDS OKAYYY??” But, again, Doing Uncomfortable Shit = mad personal growth, so I did it. I went from panel to panel, lunch to lunch, dinner to dinner, party to party, and I made friends. I had to spend a little bit of time in between all the madness hiding in my bubble bath to regroup from All The Socializing With Strangers, but overall I met a shit ton of people. And not just any people, kind people. Creative people. Friendly and open and passionate people. I’ll tell you, for an event filled with women so beautiful and stylish it’s as if Pinterest came to life right in the middle of Salt Lake City, there wasn’t a catty remark to be heard or a judge-y face to be witnessed. Should that surprise me? I don’t know, but it did.
My favorite part of the event (other than ordering delicious pesto pizza from room service at 10:30pm and eating it in the bathtub), wasn’t actually part of the event at all. After I took “Doing Uncomfortable Shit” to the ultimate level at Gretchen Rubin’s closing keynote by standing up and asking her a question in front of ALL 500 MOTHER WATCHING PEOPLE, I joined in on one of Erin Loechner’s impromptu “Resource Parties” and realized, again, that people are inherently good and genuinely want to help each other whenever possible.
Never heard of a Resource Party? Yeah, I hadn’t either, but basically you get a group of people together, everyone stands in a circle, and then you go around the circle and each person has one minute to share a big (but specific) thing they’d like to accomplish in the coming months. Then, once they’ve shared their thing, anyone in the circle who can help them accomplish it (or who knows someone who could help them accomplish it) silently walks over and hands them a business card. At the end of it, everyone is left holding at least a few business cards from people who have offered to help them achieve their goal, and they can go home, follow up on their own, and hopefully make the magic happen.
HOW RIDICULOUSLY BRILLIANT IS THAT??
So brilliant, in fact, that I’m going to host a virtual Resource Party, right here, right now. Want in? Leave a comment sharing one (super specific) thing that you want to accomplish in 2012. Do you want to get an article published in SELF Magazine? Do you want to learn basic Photoshop skills? Complete a half marathon? Travel to Spain? Master the art of pole dancing? Whatever your thing is, leave it in the comments. Then, read through other people’s comments and offer your help wherever you can. Maybe you’re an ace at gluten-free baking and you see that someone else wants to learn some new gluten-free recipes to add to their culinary arsenal. Reply to their comment, offer to help, and give them a way to get in touch with you (email address, Twitter handle, etc).
Who knows, you could find the perfect ally or mentor to help you achieve your goal, and you might just be the missing link to making someone else’s dream come true. You could totally do that. Yes, you! You could be someone else’s fairy goal-mother (or goal-father!) and help them turn their big scary dream into a reality. And hey, before you start being all self-deprecating and telling me that you’re not an expert in anything and that you don’t have anything to offer, let me interrupt you and say that that’s bullshit. Seriously, bullshit. Everyone is good at something. Everyone is good at lots of somethings, in fact, and it’s time you stood up and announced to the world that you’re a pretty great illustrator, or that you’re knowledgeable about weight lifting, or that you have an inappropriately delicious brownie recipe. Maybe what you have to offer is that you’re incredibly supportive, and even though you might not have the exact expertise someone else is looking for, you know that you’re the perfect person to be their support system while they pursue their goal. Sometimes, being supportive and being the person someone else can check in with along the way matters more than anything else, so let’s stop being afraid to admit that we’re totally fucking awesome and that we have a lot to offer, okay? Also, let’s stop hoarding our awesome all to ourselves. I mean, sharing the awesome only breeds more of the awesome, right??
RIGHT.

Love this idea! And I’m running my first half marathon in May and have no training partners or friends running with me. I need people to help keep me motivated!
https://twitter.com/erinkayel
I’m on it! I have 4 halfs coming up – one in the middle of February, one at the end of March, one at the beginning of May, and one at the end of June. Let’s talk running, lady!
Erin, have you heard of DailyMile? I always encourage runners (no matter the level) to join – it’s instant motivation! I’ll be your first friend (nicole is on there too)!!
I’m running a 10 mile run in May and it is my first major run. I just joined daily mile yesterday – let’s all add each other!
Sarah, i think my username on DM is tara_lane (same as my twitter). Also, you live in Philly? So do I!!! I love the broad street run. Let’s meet up and run sometime!
I’m doing my first one by myself and the training has been awesome!
Do the Hal Hidgon’s schedule:
http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51131/Half-Marathon-Novice-1-Training-Program
I was going to do it, but running 6 days a week is tough for me… plus sounds like a good way to get injured. I’ve been looking around and think I’m going to go with a combo plan so I get some cross-training in, too!
Hi Erin! As Becky said, Hal Hidgon’s training programs are awesome and easy to follow. I plan on running my first half marathon this year as well. I started on the 10K training plan first. Then I went to the half marathon training. As for staying motivated, you have to remind yourself how awesome you feel after your runs.
I’m running my first half marathon this weekend and motivation is key! I’m finding this is all mental
I’d love to chat with you about running! Also check out my site http://runningatdisney.com for more running information and email me anytime at sarah (at) runningatdisney.com. Also make sure to follow me on Twitter this weekend as I tweet during the race!!
@RunningAtDisney
This is awesome. All of it.
My big scary dream:
I want to have something I write (a poem, short story, prose) published in paper format (magazine, book).
Wow… Funny how it’s scary to even write it.
Also, my contact information: brittisgood AT gmail
Brittany — I can help you with this. Expect an email in the next few days.
Hi Brittany! I can offer some advice on this as well. Will email you soon
I want to pass the CPA exam.
That’s been on my list for quite some time. Are you taking a review course?
Accountability/study buddy?
I work for a CPA Review Company! I can help you out! We have a ton of free resources I can send your way or I can get you a free part of two. *Especially if you have a blog and feel like writing about it!* I’ll get your contact info from Miss Nicole!
Part or* two
First of all, huge kudos to you for being awesome and doing uncomfortable shit. I think it’s inspiring.
I want a job, preferably part time, in Seattle. Grad school financial support, if you will.
I had this problem in college trying to find a third job to support myself. My tip: get in a car, drive around, and even if they don’t advertise that they’re hiring, walk into the weirdest places you can find and ask for a job. That’s how I started working at a porn/sex toy shop, and along with making a nice pile of cash, it was the most fun job in the history of ever. Good luck!
Another great resource is Craigslist. You can find all sorts of part time jobs that will be flexible with your schedule.
I have a friend who is paying her and her husband through seminary by starting a cleaning business. She just vacuums fancy houses and gets $20/ hr. She creates her own hours and all of her clients refer her to their friends so now she has to hire people. If only I could go back…
I have two:
1) I want to incorporate my business already.
2) I also want to earn my rent money from blog revenue.
Nicole, this is brilliant! xoxo
Doniree,
I can help tell you the steps you need to get your biz legal. I just finished and now am the proud owner of the trademarked biz- BrandKit! Let me know chicky.
Also, I want to earn money from my blog that I am started so whenever you figure that out we can tradesies.
Andrea
Clearly I can help you incorporate your business!
I have the same #2 goal! I want to build my viewership and earn enough money to consider myself a real writer. Any help or advice on this would be greatly appreciated and maybe we can support each other in the process Doniree?
Um, I want to incorporate my business too! Halp?
I’m @tenaciousleigh on twitter.
Incorporating your business is easy to do on LegalZoom. I just did it. You do need to know if you want a sole proprietor or LLC setup. That’s more complicated to explain but they have people for that. I don’t in any way work for them but it’s quite simple to get all those tax documents that way. I don’t think it’s the cheapest way to go but it’s quick. They’ll even help with the EIN number.
i want to shoot an engagement session at the Neon Museum in Vegas (http://www.neonmuseum.org/)
i want to get a photo of mine published. somewhere. anywhere. haha.
LOVE this Nic! <3
My cousin is a wedding photographer in California! I’m sure she’d be willing to give you some tips. She’s at Dana Grant Photography: http://danagrantphotography.com/.
ah! thank you love! <3
I want to learn to make homemade wine- GOOD homemade wine!
So do I!!!
I want to accomplish telling the guy I love how I feel. I know it’s simple and SOUNDS simple but laying it all on the table is scary!
this is brilliant by the way!
Oh, I am in the same boat. I used to be amazingly good at sharing my emotions and talking about how I feel, but somewhere along the way, I zipped that up too tightly.
Don’t know that I have the answers, but happy to talk about it! @niferann4
I don’t have any answers either, but I’m great at ripping my heart out and slapping it on the table in front of someone. I can probably help. I’m @amberadrian on the Twitters.
Yay1 I like this idea!
1) I want to buy a domain and design my own web site
2) I want to partner up with someone else and start my design/planning/architecture company. Probably start on a small scale and go from there.
-L
i don’t know a lot about this, but i’ve loved working with bluehost to host my website. i bought my domain through them and their customer service has been killer everytime i’ve needed help. good luck!
I want to design my own website, too…obviously, I have no idea how but I can provide you some moral support.
I use bluehost too and have gotten pretty decent at the headway theme. It’s how I designed/built my site. Take a look at the link and if you likey, I can talk you through some of the basics.
@tenaciousleigh on twitter.
1) I have BlueHost and I want to learn how to use it. I have two domains and they are interwoven and messed up and I don’t know how to fix it… I want to just set up my blog to be pretty and simple and then I can just focus on writing, not the tech stuff. I guess it is just the basics of site management and how to set it up so writing is all I can focus on. Help!
2) Also – I can help with basic business ideas, strategy, marketing, pitching, product development, etc! I’d love to help out in the beginnings of a business…
I just bought my own domain from Domain.com and am in the works of setting it up. I know a lot of people use Bluehost, but I’d heard too many horror stories with them. I’m still in the works, but if you want my thoughts as I go along, email me or tweet me at @thatjessgal
I want to take a solo trip somewhere. Somewhere that doesn’t involve visiting family (I go to Florida alot). What’s a good city to get lost in? I was thinking San Francisco or Boston or anywhere really.
@beckles85 on the twitter.
Abroad, both London & Paris are wonderful places to visit. Here in the States, I’d throw out a recommendation for New Orleans. I visited earlier this year & ended up having an impromptu dinner with three high school counselors from California, and I was quasi-adopted by two Tennessee couples vacationing together whom I met on a ghost & vampire tour (and who, as it turned out, were staying at my hotel). The atmosphere in the Big Easy is just that; everyone’s so laid back that it’s hard not to end up in the same mindset yourself. And if you stay in the French Quarter, as I did, you don’t need to worry about a car. It’s all very walkable. I put some reviews on Yelp for the places I visited (great resource when heading to a city you don’t know, by the way): http://www.yelp.com/list/two-days-in-new-orleans-new-orleans
Good luck, & have fun!
Also, wikitravel is a fantastic resource; use it!
I agree with New Orleans for solo travel. I went with my husband who was there for a work conference, so I got the days to myself to explore. Very European and the people are so friendly.
Thanks! Will research. I’d love to stay in the French Quarter if only for the food.
I think I’m putting London in the 2013 goals. I want to save time and go for 2-4 weeks.
If you want an inexpensive & conveniently located place to stay (with breakfast), I stayed here: http://www.vrbo.com/296103. Nadia (the owner) is lovely. And Rick Steves’ guides for Europe are fantstic, by the way!
I live in London and also have quite a lot of experience with taking solo trips (I went backpacking alone). Feel free to email me if you want any London or general advice = kerilouiseday [at] yahoo.co.uk
Another vote for New Orleans for solo travel. There are a million things to do and the people are so incredibly friendly.
I also loved San Francisco solo, I housesitted for my aunt and uncle for three weeks and loved exploring the city and spending time along the coast just a short drive away. Half Moon Bay is incredible.
Overseas I would choose Paris or Brussels.
You can always come visit me in Louisiana
Not sure you can get lost in my town but OMG….we have AMAZING food here.
go to Chicago. Best city for something like that!
I live here if you ever need someone to show you around!
Thanks! I’m going to look into Chicago in summer sometime and New Orleans seems pretty popular. I was in NOLA once but I was little, so I don’t remember much.
I’m also in Chicago and can tell amazing eateries- Chicago is a City of Neighborhoods! You could walk for days if you wanted to. Feel free to contact me with questions: @Challin12
Beckles,
You are always welcome in Austin TX! I live her and Nicole is coming next month
Andrea
Do it! I went to Santa Fe last summer by myself, and it was the most amazing experience. Wherever you go, you will meet people and realize you are, in fact, your favorite person. I’d love to hear more about where you’re planning to go and offer any support. <3 (caitlinhamrin@gmail.com)
Definitely Chicago! I lived there for several years and was in love from the minute I got there until the minute I (unhappily) left. I also wanted to travel alone and planned a trip to Miami one weekend but at the last minute cancelled, and took myself downtown and stayed 2 nights in a nice hotel.
You know it’s good when a girl wants to vacation in the same city she lives in!! Wherever you end up, enjoy. It will be great.
Also, I highly recommend Hotwire or naming your own price on Priceline for your trip. It’s always worked out well for me.
I live in Chicago, too, if you want a tour guide/(drinking partner)!
(@toridotgov)
Beckles, I live in Boston. I can help you get lost. I know some great spots. The great thing about visiting Boston is that once you come you’ll never be lost in Boston again. I can provide you with some great spots to visit and some of my favorite spots that travelers wouldn’t get to see. I followed you on Twitter. Feel free to DM me. @kaitlinmaclean
I too am very familiar with Boston and don’t live that far away, so happy to help you plan that trip if you decide to do it! I think Boston is a smaller city that easy to get lost in as a single gal and still feel safe. San Francisco is a bit bigger, but I also think it’s a good candidate! I felt extremely safe there all the time.
Good luck, and feel free to reach out — @niferann4
Beckles, not only do I live in Boston, but I traveled solo to San Francisco (and Las Vegas) last year, so I’ve got your two destinations covered! Traveling solo was the scariest and most invigorating thing I’ve done in a while. I highly recommend it. And I can give you some tips if you choose to make SF a destination. I would HIGHLY recommend checking out AirBnb.com. It’s sort of like couch-surfers, only less sketchy, and you pay per night. I stayed with the most wonderful couple in the Mission District for cheap, given the amenities. It was great to be able to travel solo, but feel like you’re still coming home to someone at the end of the day. Alternatively, if you are thinking about Boston, I can also recommend some places to go and things to see. Feel free to reach out (@blueberrysal on Twitter)
Also, for anyone reading this that is familiar with Chicago, that’s where I’m planning to go to next, and I’d love any recommendations you have!
I’m from Chicago if you want to talk about your trip!
@meghen3
San Francisco is my favorite city to get lost in. It’s my favorite city to do everything in. If you decide on SF, I’ll have a ton of ideas for you. (@amberadrian)
I second a lot of the other suggestions here. I’ve traveled solo to NYC and Boston. Both places have more than enough stuff to do and you’ll never feel like you’re alone. I’ve been to Chicago and New Orleans on group trips, but I think those places would be great for solo travel.
I love traveling by myself. I find it so calming and refreshing. If you ever need someone to cheer you on, tweet me @laurabond.
If you feel like visiting your neighbours to the North, come to Ottawa. I moved here for school at the beginning of the year and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. The city is very people-friendly, especially if you stay downtown! I would recommend coming here in the summer or fall though, since winter tends to be freeze-yer-ass-off cold and spring is just messy.
And if you need a tour guide, I know a bunch of people who will be more than willing to oblige
Oh, and you can find me on twitter @kate_the_kitten (don’t judge) or send me an email at katherine_is(at)shaw(dot)ca.
Come to Boston! I’m super close and can meetup for fun while you’re exploring and getting lost
Awesome idea! Thanks for inspiring me to do more!
I want to get non-profit status for my horse sanctuary.
A good friend of mine recently made her organization non-profit! mari2cents.blogspot.com I’m sure she’d be willing to help you out in any way she can!
Thanks Taylor! I’ll check out your friend’s blog. I’ve been struggling for a year to try and figure out all the hoops to jump through. I know I could do so much more if I was non-profit. Thanks for the help!!!
I’m way late to this party but I do lots of consulting for non-profit startups. If you email me (laurwilk@gmail.com), I can give you the step-by-step of the entire process and help you navigate through until you receive 501c3 status.
After years of writing for magazines and blogs, I’d like to publish one of my short stories.
(contact info on my site)
I want to publish a book this year. A full length novel, and have a successful blog
Please e-mail me your contact information. I can help with this.
I have little to no experience with the publishing bit, but I write all the time, and I’m working on my own novel. Always down for some solidarity
I’m with you. I’d like to write a book this year (getting it published may be pushing things). Solidarity, yo. (I’m @amberadrian on the Twitters.)
I want to get out of the world of IT sales and into a position that involves more writing/communications.
-adam
@ACfry
adam.c.fry@gmail.com
Hi Adam, have you considered a marketing position at an IT company? It seems like a good first step to getting the writing experience you want while using your IT and sales background.
I work in Marketing and Internal Communications for an IT/teleconference company, so feel free to reach out — @niferann4
Adam, I would definitely look into Public Relations. There are so many agencies/firms that write on nothing but Tech, I guarantee you could find something. Depending on where you’re located, I could help you. @challin12
i want to make a friend in denver, colorado. i already did my biggest uncomfortable step/crazy thing of the year and quit my job and am moving to denver, jobless, knowing no one. so, a job would be awesome, but i’d rather be poor than friendless. – @katelynburkhart
Katelyn,
I mentored a girl when I was living in DC who is now in Denver. Shes a reporter for the post and very cool! I’ll connect you two =)
I used to live in Colorado, and most of my extended family is around Denver, with two early 30something brothers right in LoDo. I’ve got contacts–email me
yay, thanks so much klutzyballerina! i’ll be in capitol hill, so right in that area. shoot me your contact info, por favor!
Sorry about that– klutzyballerina at gmail.com
Hi Katelyn! I live in Boulder, not far from you. Some of my closest friends in Denver/Boulder I met originally from blogging.
Other funny thing, I moved in 2008 to Boulder with nothing but my car and what was in it, I had no friends here, no job and no place to live. I can relate and it’s really an amazing challenge and feat. I’m so happy I did it. Let’s meetup, yea?
I’m gracekboyle at gmail dot com | @gracekboyle
Ill follow you now! YAY!
Hi Grace,
I came out to Boulder in 2008 with nothing except an intense determination to get out of my parents’ house. We should ALL meet up! I’d love that.
I don’t live in Denver, but I live down in Fremon County area and I occasionally make it up there. If there is some sort of get-together, I would love to make the drive!
Fremont County, oops! And my contact is jessica oliveto at gmail
Hi there, my company is expanding to Denver and getting ready to do a lot of hiring. shoot me an email kayleen.damron@gmail.com
Hi Katelyn, how about a Boulder friend that’s sometimes in Denver? What kind of job are you looking for? <3
Like Doni, I have two goals.
1) I want to make enough money from my design work that I can donate money to charity and contribute to my savings account without not being able to make rent. Suggestions for great books on business? Ways to increase business? Etc.
2) Get effing legal, yo. Figure out the difference between sole proprietorship and being and LLC and do one.
Also, I want to go to ALT Summit next year. Seriously. I’m doing it.
“Good in a Room” is an excellent book on networking (icky term, but you know what I mean) and building a business from the ground up!
How To Be A Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul is a super helpful book, and not just for graphic designers. I also have read and reread Design*Sponge’s ‘biz ladies’ series for more focused articles on single aspects of creative businesses.
I want to go to Alt Summit, too, Ashley! Roomies?!
YES! It’s happening. Such fun we shall have! (And freeze. January! In Utah!)
I want to do a project 365 but I don’t even know how to use my camera outside of auto.
And I’d like to get my shit together with my blog but that’s more self-discipline and time management.
Contact info… duh

Hi Amber,
The Pioneer Woman (http://thepioneerwoman.com/) has an entire section of her blog dedicated to photography. I’m an amateur photographer who has played with the idea of going pro (I do a few photoshoots throughout the year for friends and family) and as someone who knows the basics of my camera, I’ve found her explanations to be pretty easy to follow.
I’m always up for talking about photography! meghancamino at gmail dot com.
I also have a pro photo blog template which works with blue host and wordpress… best money I ever spent. http://www.prophotoblogs.com/
I completed a Project 365 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/an_drea/sets/72157620701741465/) and can help you out with basic camera how-tos AND motivation! Email me: hello(at)andreaisasi.com
Awesome! Thank you!
There is a photographer, Nicole, http://nicolesclasses.blogspot.com/ who teaches photo classes along with photo editing. She has lots of specials and on-line classes as well as in person. Plus she has a photo 101 book. That may be a great start to learn the basics of manual mode.
Sweet, I’ll definitely have to check it out!
Hi Amber!
I’m a pro photographer and i’m totally down to help you however I can. (Emails, Skype, Whatever!). I encourage ALL new photogs to do a project 365 as it forces you to learn your camera.
Contact me if you’d like and we’ll chat! <3

This is such a genius idea.
And I already see one person on the list I have an idea for.
My goal…
I want to find a literary agent.

I want to find someone who knows how to program (preferably in the google API) and talk to them about my idea for a gmail extension because it’s been floating around in my head for years and the only thing stopping me from creating it is the fact that I have no idea how to program.
Oh, and jennifer {dot} Bollenbacher {at} gmail {dot} com
Ok my turn! This year I hope to land at least 4 clients for my personal branding biz BrandKit and want to help any of you achieve your goals by supporting you and coaching you as your mentor.
Please and thank you world.

I would like to look into options for going to grad school for very cheap/free. Are there scholarships/grants out there that I don’t know about yet?
@mbwdimarco
mbwdimarco@gmail.com
Hi Maria,
I’m currently a graduate student in a PhD program and can help talk you through some of the financial aid stuff. A lot varies by the program, but I’d love to share any advice/expertise I’ve accumulated.
Jackie,
jms524@nyu.edu
Hi Maria,
Like Jackie, I’m also a grad student. If you’re looking for a professional degree, I don’t know the ins and outs, but if you’re looking for something in social sciences or humanities, I can help you out! Also, thegradcafe.com and its forums are a great resource.
reneepowers4 at gmail dot com
@BelleRenee
If you have any interest in going overseas, there are lots of cheap/free programs in Europe. (My experience in Europe is with undergrad but I do know something about graduate programs.) If you want more info email me at pearcejm@gmail.com.
I want to grow my blog! And I have absolutely no idea how to do that..
love(dot)citron(at)gmail(dot)com
Hi Alison! I’m no expert, but from personal experience I can tell you what helped my blog: be very present in all forms of social media (Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, Tumblr), follow/converse with others, visit other blogs that interest you and leave comments. It really is a two way stree, and I found engaging others – genuinely – helped a lot. Good luck! I’ll be reading
Thanks, Nic! That’s great advice – I read a TON of blogs but rarely comment. I’m going to start putting myself out there more.
I agree with Nic, connecting with other bloggers and being present on social networks is key. Also, responding to the comments on your blog with more than just a “Thanks” shows people that you really value their perspective and motivates them to come back. Having other bloggers guest post can also help. They will help you promote the post and their followers/friends will know about your blog. Good luck!
Thanks, Sam. I never considered asking people to guest post before.. that’s a great idea!
Hi Alison!
Nicole Balch (from Making it Lovely) recapped the panel she was part of at AltSummit. The topic was Growing Your Readership. I started going through it last night and there were some helpful tips! http://storify.com/nicolebalch/growing-a-readership-alt-summit-2012
Hi Alison, I’d love to share what has & hasn’t worked for me.
sowonderfulsomarvelous {at} gmail
Nicole, this is great.
I need some source of income from late May to late July. I’d love to work remotely. I’m a killer writer/editor/speaker/teacher and would be thrilled to use my MA in Communication. reneepowers4 at gmail dot com
I’ve been a lot of “Virtual professor/teacher/instructor” jobs.
When I email you my post, let’s start chatting about this.
LOVE this idea.
I have something similar to Adam – Get out of IT and into marketing/communications (where I belong). Looking for something in Chicago!
@lohogetsreal
Hi Laura! I’m actually in marketing in Chicago. I’ll definitely keep a look out for you. If you want to talk about it contact me!
@meghen3
You’re my hero! I’m glad you had a good time at Alt, stepping out of your comfort zone, and eating in the bath tub (jealous).
I just had my first baby in November and it’s killing me to leave her 11 hours a day to work for someone else. It literally makes me sick to my stomach each morning. I would love to do some kind of work from home, even if it was part-time. I’m not overly picky but I love blogging and interacting with others through any form of social media. If anyone has any ideas, tips – or a job offer! – I’m all ears. Thanks in advance!

Try freelance.com. I’ve heard a few people have success with that. Also, look on companies’ specific websites-the don’t always post social media opening on job boards.
Thank you!
Hey Nic,
Check out http://www.freelancewritinggigs.com — I have found some great gigs from this site, and it’s updated daily!
Hi Nic!
I have a 1.5 year old, and I quit my job during maternity leave to work part-time at Starbucks. Then a few months later, a super-flexibly part-time job fell in my lap. Now I work part-time (2o hrs/week) at a high school and part-time for myself as a graphic designer. I LOVE IT. It’s truly the best of both worlds.
I write all about it on my blog, starting with this post.
If you can afford it – it’s worth the leap of faith (and stable income!) to see your baby more. <3
You might be able to make it work with a combination of freelance stuff, watching a friend’s child along with yours for extra income, a part time job, cutting back on non-necessity things {just ditching cable can be $100+ a month}, or re-vamping your budget.
I want to get an Agent by the Spring – a real, non-smarmy, screenwriting agent. I’d sell the tip of my left pinky for this.
My email should be connected to my name, but if not: jessdigiacinto@gmail
PS: I LOVE THIS IDEA
Oh, I love this. Okay, here’s my thing: I have a novel (YA, but with crossover potential) coming out in July. My publisher will be doing its own marketing thing, but I would love to line up an interview or two on my own, around the release date, with a well-circulated publication or website to help get the word out. My contact info is on my site.
Hey Kat,
I can help you, fo real! I work for a YA literary magazine and I’m just starting to do more author interviews for our website. EEE!
@toridotgov
or
hamlette@gmail.com
My friend writes a book review blog with author interviews. As of right now, she has over 500 followers. If she doesn’t want to review it for some reason, I can. I guest post on there occasionally. Congrats on the book
I have a good friend who writes on the Rather Be Reading Blog http://ratherbereadingblog.com/ and they cover mainly YA novels. I’m sure she’d love to do a review for you. Contact Estelle from the information on the site. Good Luck!
I’d like to try to be more active on my new site and tweet more for it.
I am just a beginner at this “web multi tasking social media” bit and I want to improve and also share more frequently.
The end goal was to have teachers contribute to the site, but as of now, it’s just me.
If you’re on tumblr, check it out.
I also have another tumblr, which is http://regentsoftom.tumblr.com/
Tumblr is now blocked at my place of work, so I’ll have to make more of an effort to “tumble” from home.
This is BRILLIANT!
I’ve had this long-standing ambition to move to America (from Oxford, England). Preferably San Francisco… but I have NO idea how I would go about applying for jobs/visas etc. I work in advertising/research. Any tips?
@anniegerbil
If you want a postcard from North Carolina, email me at pearcejm@gmail.com
Sorry, I hit reply to the wrong entry!
Awesome idea! I’d like to create a more prolific photography shop on Etsy by learning to use Photoshop Elements 10 as my primary editing software. Soooo lost in the photoshop world. heygingermandy@gmail.com
oh, and paying a good portion of my rent through photography sales would be nice, too
I feel you on that. I have a degree in photography, but it was in the early 90′s when I earned it. Digital photography? Yeah, no. We had film and printed in the darkroom. I don’t know a thing about Photoshop really.
I’m pretty well-versed in a different version of Photoshop (CS3) so I don’t know if I could help you with the most specific questions, but I’d be happy to try. And/or, you could consider taking a class. I took a couple of courses during my undergrad that covered it, so you could check out a university near you to see if they have any. Or, I know there’s a camera shop here in St. Louis that offers Photoshop elements workshops. That sort of thing might be worth the investment. Plus, feel free to email me with questions! jnsarber (at) gmail (dot) com.
I would love to learn Photoshop to. If you get any good responses let me know. jfer421@me.com
Such a wonderful idea. Alt Summit sounds spectacular and amazing.
Two goals:
1. Train for and complete a half marathon. I haven’t gone running in years!
2. Collect a postcard from all 50 states and as many other places as I can by the end of the year, and subsequently make new friends through this.
Contact info: taylor.bartelt@gmail.com or http://twitter.com/sailorrtaylorr
I can send you a postcard from Ohio.
I can send you a post card from Monaco or France for your collection! Email me a postal address and I’ll send one out this week :0)
My email is nicerinnice06@gmail.com
I can send you a post card from Utah! what a wonderful goal!
Thanks soooooo much! Just shoot me an email or a tweet and I’ll reply with my address
I just completed my first half marathon in October and would love to help you complete yours! Before I started training I couldn’t even run a half mile without needing to stop. Let me know how I can help you make this happen! ameenamarie {at} gmail {dot} com
Hi Taylor! I can send you a postcard from California
Send me an address: jennabritton [at] gmail.
I highly recommend starting with a Couch to 5K program–I downloaded one on my iPhone (it’s now called “Ease Into a 5K”) and I am now training for a half marathon. I couldn’t even run 1/4 mile without stopping when I started, but now my high (to date) is 8 miles. Start small, it will get easier!
Gretchen, that comment is so inspiring! I can barely complete a 1/4 mile without stopping and would love some tips on how you got going. Was it just the Couch to 5K program that got you going? @blueberrysal on Twitter
I can send you a post card from South Dakota.
I can send you a postcard from North Carolina! Email me at pearcejm@gmail.com
I’ll send you postcards from Ottawa and Winnipeg
Email katherine_is@shaw.ca with your info.
I can send you a postcard from Massachusetts!
I’ll tweet you.
Hi Taylor,
If you want a postcard from Boston, MA feel free to contact me! I follow you now on Twitter.
Twitter — @CaitlinPanella
I can send you one from Alaska! ashleywweaver @ yahoo And… I ran my first 1/2 last summer, and am training for my first full. I went form unable to fun 1/10 of a mile to running a half marathon in a year. You can do it!!
The postcard thing is a fab idea! I collect postcards from anywhere my friends have been (its the one “souvenir” i have them bring back for me) and it’s always wonderful to look back at them. I’m not sure where you are or what you have already, but I can send one from California/San Diego!
Hi Taylor! I can send you a postcard from Brazil!
I can send you a postcard from AZ! I’m also up for making new friends.
Pamela
I’m going to tweet you, but I can send a postcard from Maine!
I LOVE snail mail. If you want a card from Florida email me your address or hit me up on the tweet-beat @thatjessgal
I can send one from Georgia
I can send you one from Virginia or Maryland!
If you need one from Kansas let me know!
Hi Taylor! I’m training for a half marathon this year as well and I love Hal Hidgon’s programs. http://www.halhigdon.com/
I started with the 10K program first because the half looked really intimidating at first! Going slow and getting better has been such an awesome feeling. But the trick for me was to start really slow so I would keep up. Whenever I tried to be a rockstar, I would get angry at myself and give up.
I’m about to run my first half marathon this weekend and have 3 more schedule for the year. I’d love to talk running with you. Check out my site http://runningatdisney.com and feel free to contact me anytime at sarah (at) runningatdisney.com
I can also send you a postcard from Walt Disney World when I’m down this week and from CT.
This is the year I want to have a fitness article published nationally. I have had at least a dozen published regionally, but this year I want to reach a broader scale. I am hoping to be published in Women’s Running, Fitness, SELF, Women’s Health or Women’s Adventure.
I would like to run a half marathon by the fall and am looking for a running buddy in MA. I am new to running and would like to find a group or person who is willing to run with the turtle of the group. Warning: snails may pass us. Also just looking for running tips. How to get into it. I’ve been “running” on and off for years and never quite found the running high everyone talks about. Even 3 miles felt like a chore.
@kaitlinmaclean
I’d love to geek out about running with you, Kaitlin! I’m a new runner too, and even though I’m not in MA, I’d be happy to help however I can!
Hi Kaitlin!
Hit me up @niferann4. I’m in RI on the border of MA, so we might be able to make something work! I’m on running leave with an injury right now, but I’m hoping to get it sorted out by March to start half marathon training. I’m by no means fast — going back, my pace will probably be about an 11-min/mi — and I’ll need to build my distance back up to. I’ll probably revert back to the Ease Into 10K program I did last fall when I return, and I’d love to have a running buddy!
Hey Jen- I’m on the RI/MA border too- walking to running buddies rule! @kristencurator
Well.. I can’t go running with you since I live in the UK but but but.. happy to send encouragement and exchange tips! You can find me on Twitter @antoniaharler or email me harler (dot) antonia (at) gmail (dot) com
Kaitline- I’m in southern MA- where are you? I’ve been out of running for a bit and way out of shape- slowly getting back into it. @kristencurator
Hi Kaitlin! I’m training for a half marathon this year as well and I love Hal Hidgon’s programs. http://www.halhigdon.com/
I started with the 10K program first because the half looked really intimidating at first! Ease into it and be happy that you are running at all. I’m in NJ so I can’t be an in-person buddy, but I’m here for support!
The trick for me to enjoy running was to go slow and ignore my pace and time. As I kept practicing and saw I was getting better, I actually started to become addicted.
I want to start freelance writing or start making money from my blog. I know I can do it, it’s just a matter of researching and finding the right opportunity.
Thanks for this, Nicole.
@MeganCassidy
Right there with you, Megan
I want to do the same! Maybe we can all start an “aspiring freelancer” support group.
This is a great idea!
A few goals. I have a hard time meeting new people and making friends – so I’d like to meet 5-10 new people in Chicago, preferably internet people (and hopefully make some lasting friendships!)
I would like to take a solo trip to some place – perhaps San Francisco, Boston, or any major city. And couchsurf with a complete stranger.
And lastly, I would like to find a mentor in photography. I want to build new skills with photography and I would love a great photographer to help me with that!
melissa [dot] cosgrove [at] gmail [dot] com or find me @bymelissa
Melissa – I don’t know if I’m a “great” photographer, but I’ve been pursuing a self-taught photography career for a while now and I’d love to help you out in any way I can!
http://valorieclarkphotography.com
@VCPphotography
Melissa, check out the Chicago Yelp community. I joined my Yelp community, and I have made some great friends who are as interested in checking out fun places in the city as I am.
If you make it to Boston, let me know. I’m not far, and I can give you some suggestions.
@niferann4
That’s a great idea, actually! And I always think about how I should start reviewing on Yelp instead of just looking stuff up, haha.
I think all of us Chicagoans should meet up and make friends. This city is a little bit lonely in the winter.
It really is lonely in the winter. And it appears that there are so many of us (Chicagoans), so I love the idea of a meetup!
I love that idea, too! Chicago winters are kind of the worst.
I am so in for a Chicago meetup! In March I’ll be coming home from a year in South Korea and would love to meet new people!
I would love to meet some new Chicago friends! I love my grad school buddies, but they are really the only people I know here. A meet-up would be fabulous.
stephanieinsanity at gmail
or @stephaniemm17
Hey Melissa,
I know someone great you can couchsurf with in San Fran. Send me an email and I will get you in touch.
Funny that you mention couchsurfing, since in many towns the http://www.couchsurfing.com community has meetups! Its a good way to meet people and get some reviews on the site if you end up using it to surf somewhere else!
I’m in Chicago (and bored) too! And my group of friends has significantly dropped since I went to school out of state. I’ll find you on Twitter!
Hey Melissa!
I’m a professional photographer and I’d love to help you however I can!
Feel free to email me at rachel@hellogorgeousphotography.net and we’ll chat! <3
This is an inspiring idea.
2012 Goal: Find a teaching job in the chicago-land area. Any teaching job.. I graduate in May and the idea of not having a job lined up terrifies me to my core.
contact info: katiesarena [at] gmail [dot] com
I have a handful of friends in the Chicago area, a few of which are in teaching. I’ll shoot you an email!
Thank You!!
I want to earn a pilot’s license! The goal is to start flight school in the spring but affordability is an issue. Any instructor pilots in the SF Bay Area willing to negotiate on their teaching rates?
@MissAdventures2
Nicole, this is brilliant! Love love love it.
I’ve wanted to get into freelance writing for years now, and have dabbled in local publications, but my BIG SCARY goal for 2012 is to pitch to my dream pubs. First on my list is Women’s Health. I have cystic fibrosis and would love to be able to write an article about living (and thriving!) with this disease.
My contact info is FromAtoPink [at] gmail [dot] com and @KatharineS84
I volunteer for Band Back Together. You can certainly tell your story there. Check it out at: bandbacktogether.com.
Good luck with all of your dreams!
Thank you! Checking it out right now
You’re quite welcome!
While I am already working on these, I could use any help I can get:
1) learn to sew
2) take better photos
3) make friends in fun places, so I can road trip or fly from one to the next in 2013.
Come visit me!!!
Yes!
3) I live in Cape Town, South Africa. Want to be friends. Would be more than willing to play tour guide. As long as you promise that you’re not an axe murderer or anything …
Yes, starting with following your blog!
How about Seoul? I’m here for ten months!
I would like to start living a healthier lifestyle (i.e. eating right and exercising) and also acquire new belly dance clothes and accessories; would also like to visit friends that don’t live near me.
E-mail: handmadesbyheather@gmail.com
Twitter: @Yesthatgirl
I use groupon, living social, etc to try new exercise stuff. I’ve gotten really into yoga from that and I even tried circus school. It was awesome.
I also used to date a trainer, so I can def give you some tips. I’m @beckles85 on twitter or email me at foresightisblind at gmail dot com.
Hi Heather, I actually just started my new website dedicated to women who want to live a healthier lifestyle. It’s all about eating better and exercising and I do training over Skype.
I’d be happy to chat with you any time, email me at diana@dianaantholis.com
This is literally the coolest idea, Nicole. THE COOLEST. Actually, that’s a lie. Eating delicious food in your tub is the coolest idea. This is second place.
Anyway, my big crazy immediate goals:
1) Be a second shooter for a photographer at a wedding. I know what I’m doing behind a camera, but I’ve only ever been to weddings as a guest, and would like to see how the day goes before doing one on my own. I live in DC, but I’m willing to travel in the nearby area.
2) Do some sort of bungee jumping/sky diving type thing. Mostly, I need encouragement and a number for a good place I can do it. Anyone done this sort of thing in the DC area? Hit me up!
Contact info:
valorieclarkphotography.com / @VCPphotography / @simplyvalorie
Also, I just did the graduate from college and move across the country without a real job and no place to live thing (like… last week), so if anyone needs basic encouragement for that, I’m your girl.
I don’t know about the DC area but I’ve done both skydiving and bungee jumping and am happy to at least share my experiences if you need encouragement! (Strongly recommend both, by the way). arielleblogs (at) gmail
I used to live in the DC area and I went skydiving at a place in VA called skydive west point http://www.skydivewestpoint.com/ it’s a little bit of a drive but it’s hard to find a place super close to a city like that.
Ah! Thank you so much, Sarah! I will look them up now!
Hey Valorie!
I’m in Jersey, but i’m a wedding photographer.
DC is about three hours away from where I am in Cape May, but I have 20 weddings booked net year and can always use an extra hand.
Email me at rachel@hellogorgeousphotography.net if you’d like to chat about it and see if we can work something out! <3
After over 8 years working in unfulfilling positions in public affairs, I want to use my communication skills to escape politics (ugh!) and write about things I’m passionate about.
First, I want to start copywriting;
And second, I want to start a comedic blog about the circumstances, lessons and experiences that led to a tragic(ally funny) starter marriage.
nickiv@gmail.com

Check out contently.com!
This is so great. I’m totally blanking on everything I want to do this year. SO MUCH PRESSURE.
1. I want to start running more, in general. I’d like to be able to run the Turkey Trot (5 miles) on Thanksgiving this year. I run, oh, not at all right now.
2. I want to learn more about webdesign. I know enough to mess with my blog template (very very surface level) but I want to know how to design a website or a blog from the ground up. SCARY.
3. I want to be published on The Hairpin. Like. So bad. I submitted something once and it was rejected and then I got sad and dejected and now I can’t think of what else to submit. True story.
Can’t wait to read all the comments and see how I can help! My contact:

Codecademy.com has a free coding program called code year. You just sign up and get an email each week and you’re on your way. I also have a “For dummies” book that has html, javascript, css, etc that’s very informative. Though, admittedly, I haven’t gotten too far in it yet.
Awesome, thank you!
there is a great program called the couch to 5k program that I’ve done and it’s great to get you up and running. It also has a plan for a 10k (which more than your Turkey Trot, but at least you’d know that you could do it!) I’m only a beginner runner, but any hints or tips you want let me know!
Thanks! I just started Couch to 5K so hopefully that works…I’m trying to start slowly.
I think the best thing when you first start running is to start REALLY slow. What discourages people the most is that they try to start too fast and then they end up hurt or discouraged. The Couch to 5K is a GREAT place to start
That’s what worked for me.
I am a web designer, runner, and I live in Ohio!
Except Akron, not Dayton. (Though I *did* go to UD. Go Flyers!).
Anyway, I recommend just doing a lot of blog design for yourself and anyone who will let you. Keep doing it and you will get better.
How funny, I live SO close to UD and get to work with them sometimes to recruit interns. Thank you for the advice…so nice to “meet” another Ohioan!
Like Alishka, Couch to 5k worked awesomely for me! Here’s the link: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
Best of luck!
Hi Jennie, I love Hal Hidgon’s training programs. They are really easy to start and there are all kinds of levels. http://www.halhigdon.com/
I’m running my first half this year but I started with the 10K program to ease into it. My advice would be to go slow and feel how your body responds to it. As you keep going, you will see improvements which is totally motivating.
I also used the C25K program when I started running and it works great! There is also a Couch to 10K program that might help you with the Turkey Trot. 5 miles is totally doable by Thanksgiving! I’m running my first half marathon this weekend and feel totally unprepared. Check out my site http://runningatdisney.com for more running information and email me anytime at sarah (at) runningatdisney.com if you want to chat about running. Also make sure to follow me on Twitter this weekend as I tweet during the race!!
@RunningAtDisney
It really is a brilliant idea!
1)I want my blog to be as successful as this one with lots of readers and have people know my blog. “One Day I’m Gonna? Oh of course I read that!” Haha!
2)I want to do more guest blogging.
3)I want to get my own domain and get my damn Social Security Disability case settled so I’ll be able to afford Shatterboxx to design my blog!
Oh I forgot my contact info!
Email: onedayimgonna@gmail.com
Twitter: @MrsOneDay
Mrs. One Day, I’d love to have you guest blog for my series about woman and power! More info can be found here:
http://bellerenee.wordpress.com/2011/11/11/powerful-woman-monologues/
Also, have you contacted your member of Congress for assistance in expediting your SSD case? I used to be a Congressional caseworker and we facilitated that stuff quite often. Contact the local district office and ask to speak to a Social Security caseworker.
I had no idea I could do that. Can I email you or something? I have a question and don’t want to clutter up Nicole’s page. Hahaha!
And thank you! I’ll be checking your link out tonight! Yay!!
Thank you to Nicole too! What an awesome idea!
Hi there.. More than happy for you to guest blog for me. It used to be a social media blog but it’s now turned into more of a ‘life’ blog. You can check it out here: http://www.socialglitz.com – if you are interested just drop me an email or find me on Twitter @antoniaharler
I’d love to help you out with the bloggy things! I’m in the middle of moving and need some guest bloggers to talk about that while I can’t, so if you’ve ever moved anywhere for any reason, hit me up! Also, I normally charge to put ads/buttons on my site, but if you want, we can do a free button swap for February to help each other get our names out there (doesn’t everyone want more readers? haha).
My email is: valorielovely@gmail.com
Or you can just DM me on twitter – @simplyvalorie
I’m just a life blogger and that can be boring, but I’m a huge fan of having more online friends and what not. I’m totally going to throw you into my reader and what not. maybe we can do a guest post exchange or something. It’s something I want to have happen!
I don’t have a huge readership and my blog tends to be about general life stuff (plus lots of ALL CAPS and babbling), but I’d love to have you guest post! I’m adding you to my Greader, as well.
My passion is the outdoors and adventure-based learning, so getting paid to do that would be number 1. However, I’m also exploring writing and editing work, as one of my goals is to be partially location-independent. I live in Vancouver, but would love to do more travelling and spend more time outdoors. I’m @Heathervdh or heather.van.der.hoop AT gmail DOT com
Not the sexiest of names, Resource Party….but this is the single best idea. EVER.
This year I’d like to write a major feature story for my magazine (beyond the shorter profiles I already do) and amp up my web design knowledge (digging deeper into CSS). I’m also doing Code Year with Codecademy.
If you’re looking to learn more about web design, I suggest signing up for memberships at Treehouse (http://teamtreehouse.com/) or Lynda (http://www.lynda.com/). Both are great resources!
Nicole, this is SUCH an amazing idea. I want to be EVERYONE’S fairy godmother! If only I could distribute, you know, some checks.
I want to spend the whole summer abroad, and I think I reeeeally want/need to be in South America, because I have been obsessed with South American literature for YEARS. But…how? Who to go with? How to make money? WILL I DIE? etc. But I’m afraid of never living out this one dream.
(twitter: @toridotgov)
Have you considered a graduate program in South American lit, either in South America or with a study abroad program in South America?
That’s a genius idea! I’m currently waiting to hear back from grad schools so I can definitely check to see if the ones where I applied have any resources like that. Thank you!!
If you are looking into going for a summer, you could also look into interning abroad. I interned in China in the summer of 2010 through a program called ELI (http://www.eliabroad.org/) but I am pretty sure they had programs in South America also.
The downside is that you do have to pay a fee for the program – you mentioned how to “make” money there so I don’t know if this is something you would be interested in. But, in my opinion, the fee was well worth it – ELI finds you housing, finds your internship, picks you up from the airport, and gives you an in-country contact person to help you with any issues that arise the entire time you are there. I really can’t speak highly enough about the program.
There are also similar companies that do similar programs. Let me know if you have any other questions about interning abroad!
Hey,
South America is next on my list – and I have been traveling alone for years and am still alive.
Send me an email if you want with questions and I will be happy to talk to you, give you resources, a budget or what to expect to spent, or even be your travel buddy. I am seriously still looking for a travel buddy, if there is anyone interested – leaving in March for Rio.

Hey Tori! So I spent this past summer abroad in China with a group called World Endeavors. There were a lot of people there with me going as interns (which I did), volunteers, study abroad, au pairs, or even just traveling in a group. It looks like WE goes to South America too, and while I can’t speak to their South American program, the people I worked with stateside were pretty nice. I’d at least contact them and see if you can go – if you go with WE you won’t have to wait to here back from grad schools too! http://www.worldendeavors.com/destinations/americas
As for will you die? No, just be smart. Don’t go out at night alone. If you feel unsafe, get out of there. I’m central American by descent and I promise most Latinas are the friendliest people you’ll ever meet!
More than anything, I want to broaden my ability to help people with their writing. I have a website (www.bee-editing.com) and have worked with a few people through word-of-mouth, but I really struggle with self-promotion. I get really nervous and worry about all of the negative things that could happen instead of the good I could do.
If anyone has anyone they know that could use some support with a writing project (either self-published or looking for publication) I would love it if you could pass along my contact information: eclectic.editing@gmail.com.
Seriously, I would be happy to help in whatever way I can. I just don’t know how to tell people that, and that’s something I need help with.
Brenda! You’re a life saver! I’ve just started writing my next novel which I will probably self-publish toward the end of the year and I was looking for an editor! I’ll be sending you an email soon!
Brenda, you’re a life saver. (Nicole too, for doing this!)
I’m working on my next novel that I will probably self-publish toward the end of the year and I’m in need of an editor and proofreader.
Bookmarking your site right now.
As for the struggles you have with self-promotion, I’ve BEEN there, am still there on some days. Email me if you want to talk! I’ve got a lot of advice to share! (eleni@elenizoe.com)

Hi, Brenda! This is amazing. One of my 2012 goals is to write a book. Not far along enough to need you yet, but I’d love to hit you up in a few months.
Expect an email soon Brenda. I think you might be able to help me out.
Hey Brenda!
I am trying to gain some experience with social media and networking, so let me know if you want to work together–maybe I could work on getting your name out there so I have something cool to put on my resume!
email me at gigglebug390@gmail.com if you’re interested!
Hey Brenda.
I’m in the middle of writing something myself, so I’m going to keep your contact info for the future when I do need someone to edit and be helpful. I know that’s not helpful rightthissecond, but just letting you know I’m thinking of you!
This is an amazing thing.
I have two things:
I want to become a personal trainer (part time for now) and help train others.
And I want to turn this new blog of mine into something worth reading.
I’m no writer but I’ve always dreamed of having a blog and readers and it’s starting out slow…this is actually the first time posting it’s web adress anywhere

And if anyone goes to the blog and has suggestions, i’m completely open. I was told I’m not writing it like a story and need to be more story like rather than all over the place. I’m a rambler for sure. Thanks!
I looked into the personal training thing, too. My local community college has a program-I suggest checking that out. Or even talking to some gyms and seeing what type of certification they require so you don’t pay for something that’s not worth it.
Hey Jamie! Where you do you live? I’m getting in shape for my wedding this year and you could be my personal trainer if your in SF!
I’m on the peninsula.
And I don’t have any certification but you could totally be my guinea pig while I study for the test
This might work out. Email me at tnsmitan@gmail.com.
Hi Morgan! I actually do personal training via Skype! It’s so cool and everyone has a great time. The best part is you don’t have to leave your home. Let me know if you want to chat about it or try it out! diana@dianaantholis.com
Hi Jamie!
I was a personal trainer for a little while and I’d be more than happy to answer any questions you may have! Feel free to holler on twitter: @jackiempearce (I actually check my Twitter… unlike my e-mail haha!)
Hi Jamie! I just became a personal trainer in November. After many years in the corporate world, I decided to go for it because it was something I always wanted to do. I did the certification through ACE (American Council on Exercise) which is accredited and a great program.
I started my own business and I actually train people via Skype – very cool. If you have ANY questions, please email me: diana@dianaantholis.com
This is fantastic! I’ve already emailed a few people with ideas/help. My goal is to learn how to use wordpress so I can make changes to my blog. Basic things like change the header or color scheme. I love creating the designs on my own and initially set it up alone on blogger, but wordpress is a whole new world. You can find me at: sunshineandpotatoes at gmail dot com
Happy to help you out
Wordpress is easy once you get your head around it! You can email me at harler (dot) antonia (at) gmail (dot) com
Ahhh the list of things I’d like to do in 2012 is I think endless..
1) Get back into the blogging game. I lost my love for it a little bit – I have an established readership but would like to grow it and actually make people feel something when they read my stuff.
2) Make more friends here in London. After a year here I have met some amazing people but London can be lonely at times.
3) Write something so good that it gets published on a big website.
4) Learn to accept myself for who I am.
5) Run a half marathon. My first 10k is coming up and even though I don’t stick to my training as life just got in the way I will pick it up again.. and kick the 10ks but!
awesome that your first 10k is coming up. ive run many halfs and 5ks and would love to offer support and kudos. im on daily mile (need to get better about updating it as im starting to train again.) email me at tnsmitan@gmail.com or tweet me tnsmitan
I’m no good at running (did couch to 5k and was done after that) but I’m good for blogging support in any way. Guest posts, ad/button exchanges, just regular emotional support to see if what you’ve written is as good as you think it is (I have this problem all the time!), whatever! Just let me know.

@simplyvalorie
This is so friggin brilliant. Thanks Nicole!
I want to sail around the world. But I don’t want it to be just about me and my selfish dream…I want to develop some sort of school curriculum so 3rd graders can follow my trip and learn about the places I go and people I meet along the way!
@sailingbo
Oh my gosh, there are too many things I would like to accomplish.
1 – Learn to dress for my body type. My sense of style kind of sucks and I have no patience for fashion blogs, nor do I seem to be able to translate generalized tips into something that works for me. I need personalized attention in this area.
2 – I would like to get a job as an Operations/Business Manager for a small company, preferably a startup or an entrepreneurial-type non-profit.
3 – Lose some weight, yo. It’s not that I don’t know how to do this but maybe I need a buddy. Anyone in NYC?
There are some other things but these are priority.
arielleblogs (at) gmail!
Arielle– one of the blogs I found really helpful when I was trying to dress for my body type and get more use out of my closet was the now-finished blog at http://www.academichic.com! Its women with different body types and personal styles experimenting with business/professional and the occasional casual and formal outfits. The whole website is full of great tips that really helped me!
Erin
@erinkayel
erinkaye12 at gmail dot com
Arielle, my cousin is a personal shopper and would be able to give you a free e-mail consultation and suggestions if you send her some full body photos!
Check out Girl with Curves too. It’s a fashion blog but seems pretty realistic. She gets lots of pieces from Marshalls/F21/Old Navy.
Hi Arielle! I run a wellness lifestyle blog and website and live in NJ. Let me know if you ever want to chat about weight-loss, etc. I’d be happy to offer some tips! diana@dianaantholis.com
This is so amazing! Thanks for doing this!!!
So my goals for 2012:
1. Find a job in environmental policy (protection/preservation/conservation) in the Bay Area
2. Try my hand at freelance writing, or building my blog readership and earning money from it.
I’ve heard really great things about freelancer.com – maybe you could try to get freelance jobs there!
If you still want help with blog readership, maybe we could help each other out! You can contact me at valorielovely {at} gmail {dot} com, @simplyvalorie, or simplyvalorie.blogspot.com. Look forward to hearing from you.
Alrighty here it is. My goals for the year:
1) Go To Disneyland. Seeing as how I’ve never been I’m making it happen. The plans are in the works, but any tips or tricks anyone has (or things that I HAVE to do while in LA) would be welcome!
2) I want to interview/guest post swap with someone. Something like that. I have a really random blog, but I try to keep it entertaining for people and I want more readers (who doesn’t, right?) so yeah…that could happen and that would be great.
You’re amazing!
Disneyland is hands down my favorite place in the world. I would love to help you make that dream a reality! Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you have regarding your trip! ameenamarie {at} gmail {dot} com
Disneyland is running a deal. You can get 3-day park hopper tickets for a little discount.
I live close enough to Disney they I can see the fireworks every night from my front door. If you can’t get good prices from Disneyland I can hook you up with some good brokers. Or see if I can get you any other hookups. If you need tips on OC/LA I am your girl!
This is a super fabulous idea, I love it! Here are some things I’d love to do:
1. Get involved in the event/wedding planning industry in the NY/NJ/PA area. Wedding planning is my dream job – I love throwing parties and all the little details involved, but have no idea how to get started in the industry! Some advice on how to get my foot in the door would be very helpful.
2. Find a legit work-from-home job. I have some health issues that I’m working on overcoming and trying to find a “real” job has only added stress. If I could find something to do from home while I get better, it would relieve a bunch of anxiety for me.
3. Start an Etsy shop. I’m fairly good at crafting various things and baking, but I have no idea where to start. Particularly with selling baked goods/food, I need advice on how to ship things so they stay fresh and intact.
Contact info: caitfindsbalance (at) gmail (dot) com; @princesscait
some community colleges have wedding planner certification courses. i think some might even have placement.
Cait, I work in the wedding industry and can totally hook you up with some planners to shadow / watch / chat with if you’d like!
My goal – to find a very specific part time job doing some sort of data entry or content management or possibly even virtual assisstant. My larger goal for 2012 is to buy my first house and getting a second part time work from home job would go a long way in helping me achieve that goal sooner. So if anyone has some part time internet work for me, please let me know!!! kayleen.damron@gmail.com My skills are varied and awesome.
Very cool post Nicole, thatnk you so much for sharing
Reading through these comments and their responses is so perfect, it almost looks fake. And I mean this in a good way. A great way.
Alright, here’s mine:
I want to try stand-up.
…anyone?
Oh, whoops.
ali.dubrow@gmail.com
twitter.com/alibreit
Hey, I have no idea how to help you with that. I will at least follow you on twitter because I trust that you must be funny.
Where are you located? Most areas have bars that do open mic stand up sorts of things. I bet if you’re in an area where a lot of readers here are also in, they’d all go…if you’re in Central NH, I’ll go cheer you on!
I suggest getting involved in improv, which will ultimately help your standup. Check improv theatres for workshops. I did a weeklong immersion with Second City last winter, but I’m sure Improv Olympics, Comedy Sportz, The Groundlings, or UCB would have something similar. Some local colleges might even offer classes.
I want to write a book (or be in a book) about being the 25 year old married mother of four adopted kids. I want to write our story in a way that does justice to it. I want to write about bucking what my generation says I should be doing and how I struggle with this but love it at the same time. I want to connect with other people who are going outside the “norm” and I want my story out in the world.
I want to make those four little weirdos that I’m lucky enough to parent proud of the way we came together to be a family even if the rest of the world thinks we’re crazy.
What a sweet idea for a book! I work on the side as an editor (mostly for self-published authors) and would love to be a resource for you if you move forward with your idea. I can totally relate to having the world think you’re a little crazy, so no worries on that end. Let me know if you want to talk about writing or want some help organizing your book or feedback on anything you’ve written. I’d be more than happy to help (gratis, of course). berrichiello [at] gmail [dot] com
My mom runs a publishing company and we can help you with your book.
Please contact me: heathrleigh {at} gmail {dot} com
That sounds like a really compelling story! National novel writing month (nanowrimo.org) might be a good way for you to get your thoughts down on paper in draft form, if that’s something you struggle with. The idea is to write 50,000 words in a month (November is when the event happens and there’s lots of support, but you can use the idea anytime), so you have something to edit & perfect. Good luck!
Okay my goals. I really have to narrow them down. These are end of the year goals. The first three I think I have covered. It is number 4 that I need help with.
1. Get my travel blog up and running with 1,000 subscribers.
2. Finish my travel memoir – Travel, Sex, and Train Wrecks and get it out on Kindle.
3. Travel to South America for a few months.
And the one I could use HELP with
4. I want to start running events for fabulous, fearless, female travelers (this is the target audience of my blog). Not sure how to do this or how to get started, but I see (here is a perfect example) how much a blog can bring people together and form a community. I want a way to bring my blog readers together and create a business that helps them and me. So that is my big goal.
Contact info mytravelconfessions at gmail
Thanks, Juls
Hey Juls! I did a bunch of research for an internship on e-book publication and distribution, so I can point you in a direction to get it not just on Kindle, but also on Nook and iBooks and a few of the smaller e-readers! Shoot me an email at dearohrachael@gmail.com.
I want to be a fabulous fearless female traveler! (I mean, more so & more often.) So I’d be interested in some sort of event/ community development. Let me know when your blog goes live, I’ll be the first to subscribe.
jnsarber (at) gmail (dot) com
@tempoincerchio
This is such a cool idea! One of my big goals for the year (besides, ‘stop being a lazy slug’–anyone got tips on that one?) is to make new friends. Specifically, internet-y friends, knitter friends (online & irl), and friends who speak Italian. I mean, I’m not completely friendless (thank god!), I graduated from college last May and have a bunch of friends from college & high school. I haven’t really made any new friends recently, and I’d like to.
And I’d like to start running. But I’m checking out a bunch of links from the above, which I hope will help.
jnsarber (at) gmail (dot) com
@tempoincerchio
(BTW, I’m in the St. Louis area)
Juls,
I love all your goals! I don’t know how I could help with #4 , BUT! as a fabulous, fearless (sometimes), female traveler I’d love to attend the events. I have been living in S.A. for the past two years can can give you any advice on #3. I would also read your book
Kelsi
(kelsimills@gmail.com)
When you get your blog up and running, just let me know! I will absolutely subscribe because I’d like to think I’m a fearless, female traveler.
I’d also be up for some sort of community stuff or meet-ups. That may be the best way to start holding events actually! Once you’ve cultivated a community (or started to), start doing meet ups in the bar you live near. Just an idea.
valorielovely {at} gmail {dot} com
I have two:
1) I want to get an A in Biochem at university (I habitually get B’s when it comes to chemistry)
2) I want to run a half marathon before the year is over. I can run about 2 miles as is, so I thought october would be a good time to shoot for.
I am training for my first half by myself. I actually love it. Never ever thought I’d say that. I did 5 miles yesterday and YOU CAN TOO. This is my training schedule:
http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51131/Half-Marathon-Novice-1-Training-Program
Love and highly recommend Hal’s programs!! I never thought I would say I loved running either. I hurt my foot and couldn’t run for about 3 weeks and I missed it! Who knew??!!
Fairy Goal-Mother?! I LOVE YOU. And I love this resource party! Can’t wait to read through all 175 of your comments and get my Fairy Goal-Mother on.
Also, MY THING: I want to write one creative personal essay a month and submit one personal essay a month for publication. And eventually [am I allowed to have all these things??], I want to be a well-known personal essayist who gets a whole bunch of personal essays published as my own memoir.
I fantasize about:
1. Being a freelance designer (currently at a graphic design firm)
2. Getting my woodburns to sell on Etsy.
3. Publishing my book, “I’d Rather be Short” (100 illustrations…in progress)
4. Getting big time readership on my blog.
See the blog http://www.chipperthings.com to get a better idea of #2- 4.
I don’t know how to bridge the gap between “dreamer” and “realistic”. Thanks, everyone!
My mom has an Etsy shop, and so far, almost everything she’s put on Pinterest has sold really quickly. Do you have a Pinterest account? Have you tried pinning your stuff? Get some friends to repin, and it could end up all over the place, and SOMEONE will love it enough to buy it!
Is your book only illustrations?
My mom runs a publishing company and we can help you with your book.
Please contact me: heathrleigh {at} gmail {dot} com
I am a freelance graphic designer and I have an Etsy shop! I’m still pretty new at this, but I’d be happy to answer any questions you have/recommend resources. Email me at love(dot)citron(at)gmail
Hey Becky – I’d love to help you increase readership and get your woodburns to sell on Etsy and I think I have an idea for it. How about you email me at valorielovely {at} gmail {dot} com or through my blog simplyvalorie.blogspot.com?
I have applied for my DREAM job, I have networked, got other people in the field to recommend me for the position and now I just have to rock out the interview. I am typically good at interviewing, but this one is big, like make $100k more a year than I have ever made big, PLUS doing what I WANT TO DO FOREVER! TIPS (for how to prove my awesomeness–I think that I am at least 20 years younger than the other applicants, but with awesome experience–and how to calm the f%#* down!!??!
heather.forever83@gmail.com
http://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com – is a good blog with interview tips and help like that. I found it be useful.
Ditto Julie. Ramit is hard core but awesome and he has an entire series on his blog about this topic specifically.
I want to finish my ebook. While I’m at it, I’d like to (start and) finish a novel!
My half-sister just published a book of her poetry. She used the amazon kindle publishing thingy. https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/signin. She got some help from an indie writer named Barry Crowther who helped with formatting and all that jazz.
Oh boy, goals. I guess I have two biggies (aside from the standard “get a job” that I’m facing after finishing college).
1: I want to get back into my blog. I’ve been having major writer’s block recently, and the funny just isn’t flowing like it was. Once I pull myself out of this funk, I, like many others here, would like to start making some money from it! So if anyone has suggestions for pulling oneself out of a comedy-funk OR promoting/advertising on a blog, that would be wonderful. (One thing I’ve been considering as a blog feature is sarcastic advice columns, so if anyone wants sarcastic advice, email me your conundrum!) (On a related note, I’d also like to learn some web design skills so I can get rid of my standard wordpress.com template.)
2: Not going to happen in one year, but I want to become a wedding planner. At one point I decided it was something I’d really enjoy, and my mom shot my idea down by telling me that people don’t actually make money doing that, and now I know that’s not true AT ALL. But I still don’t know how to get started there, especially since I don’t want to have all the standard “what a wedding is supposed to be” stuff trained into me.
email: dearohrachael@gmail.com
One my my goals this year is to actually plan my wedding… I’m having a rough time with all of the little details and picking colors – I am terrible at decisions and there are too many choices (and i really don’t care as long as people have fun). I’d love some suggestions and then I could recommend your services. I say start off by helping people that you know, and then ask for personal recommendations and grow by word of mouth! (Maybe set up a website with pictures of your ideas that have worked out at weddings too!)
morgan (dot) ives (at) gmail.com
A friend of mine does very, very low key wedding/event planning just for friends. We all think she should do her own thing but she’s not interested. I have some ideas that might help you market your services! I think there is a HUGE market for wedding/event planners who help people on small budgets too.
tiffany (dot) vee (at) gmail (dot) com
Hiya Rachael!
I recently posted an article on how to overcome writer’s block – hope it helps
http://www.oohshinycinema.com/2012/01/writers-block-doesnt-exist-how-to-get.html
Apparently some colleges have wedding planner certificates – you could look into that! Some may even have placing after you’re certified.
For blog promoting, maybe you and I could do like an ad/button exchange so it’s free for both of us and we’re helping each other out? I’ve found they’ve helped me a lot. Let me know what you think!
simplyvalorie.blogspot.com / @simplyvalorie / valorielovely {at} gmail {dot} com
This is a really truly fantastic thing that’s going on here!
I just started blogging in August and of course, I want to be successful at that. I’m always looking for feedback but a lot of people I know in “real-life” don’t read blogs or really understand them. If any of you could let me know what you think about the design, posts, etc. that would be great!
Twitter: @ajigreer
Amanda, I’d be happy to take a look and offer feedback.
sowonderfulsomarvelous {at} gmail
I’m currently a nanny but that job will be over in June. This summer I would like to either get a job as an ESL teacher (I am TESOL certified)
OR
in a college study abroad office. These both have to do with my graduate degree and I’d be willing to try either. I’m looking in the Philadelphia area, and would also be interested in Wilmington or Newark, Delaware. I might even consider areas of New Jersey if I could take SEPTA or PATCO.
If anyone knows of any jobs in this field opening up around the summer, please let me know! Contact info: sarahnhutton @ gmail .com
This is such an amazing idea, and I love how helpful everyone is being! There are a few above me that I can help, and I’ll be contacting you in the next few days (Bare with me – my interwebs are broken at home). As far as my goals for the next year:
1. Blog:
* Create & maintain an identity (my own) through my blog
* Blog 3-4 times/week
* Participate more in conversation – comment, reply, email, etc.
* Document life moments better & more often
* Self host with custom domain and design ($$ is the issue here – I don’t make a lot, and designs are pricey)
2. Etsy- get my shop up and running, I now I won’t be able to pay my rent with the income immediately, but I’d like to see something coming in. Baby steps. To do this, I’m going to have to find a printer for my photos and prints of paintings. I’ll also have to figure out the shipping logistics. I sell my original paintings locally (pick up/drop off), but would love to put a few in my shop as well.
3. Happiness
* Figure out what makes me happy — and then do it!
* Find out what my passion is — and pursue it! (Career wise)
* Surround myself with people who make me happy & make me a better person
* Do something to help someone in need
My contact info is linked above but here it is again — just in case:
Heathrleigh [at] gmail [dot] com
@heathrleigh
A friend of mine had a VERY successful Etsy business until she had an issue with Etsy that could not be resolved. While I would strongly suggest not building an entire business just around Etsy due to her experience, she has a great set of articles on her blog about building an Etsy/store-based business online:
http://wildblueberryink.com/etsy-tips/
I was so surprised to read your goals because two of them are on my resolution list (A. Participate More In the Conversation B. Figure Out What Makes Me Happy). Let me know if you want a sounding board at an stage!
I use mpix for printing my photography right now! It’s cheap and I like the quality. Check it out.
As for happiness – have you heard of Stratejoy and Joy Juice? Because I absolutely recommend them too!
Love this idea!! Thank you so much for bringing the kindness into the virtual world. It shouldn’t surprise me, but it does. The amount of amazing people I have met online just stuns me every day. I figured I would post a comment first and then go back through to see if I can help anyone.
What I want most of all this year is to get a handle on my massive amounts of debt. My husband recently lost his job and I am supporting both of us on my teeny non-profit salary. It sucks. Especially when we have piles and piles of credit card and student loan debt. I would love to learn how to start paying this off while on a budget.
Thanks again! Your bravery is inspiring!
This blog has a lot of good advice on how to cut down your debt! http://www.andthenshesaved.com/#axzz1kUi59mpG
Kristine, my favorite debt-reduction resource is http://www.thesimpledollar.com. With some tips and tricks from there and some elbow grease, I’ve paid down my debt by nearly 20k over the last two years on a salary that is pretty close to non-profit (private school teacher)! Let me know if you want to talk about it! berrichiello [at] gmail [dot] com
I love the Get Rich Slowly blog.
Hey Kristine!
My blog is supposed to be personal finance based (my goal is to figure out my hosting so I can start posting again) but it has been a hobby of mine for a while. I’d love to work with you and give you some advice! The key is really making and sticking to a budget so that you aren’t spending more than your saving and so that you can allocate where your money goes. Email me and I can help!
morgan(dot)ives(at)gmail.com
Kristine, Have you checked out Dave Ramsey? I’m not a fan of some of the philosophies, but he makes personal finance {especially debt repayment} really accessible and easy to follow. I think I still have his book on cd floating around, if I can find it, I’d be happy to send it to you.
sowonderfulsomarvelous {at} gmail
Oh boy! My goal is super weird, but you never know. I want to do a research project on the territories of raccoons in the park near me. I’m not a grad student at all, so I need to figure out all the logistics, research methodology, and find a professor who is interested in sponsoring me, or someone like that. Also, get funding. GPS collars are super pricey.
kairoslighting@gmail
I have a friend that works for Game and Fish in AZ doing work with squirrels – if you live in AZ then I can definitely help, otherwise I could put you two in touch and she can likely help you figure out some of the logistics and methodology and such! I’ll email you.
Ooh, thanks! I’m in New York, but finding people who have done research before and can answer my barrels of questions are great!
Hey Thea!
Try crowd sourcing platforms like http://www.kickstarter.com/ or http://www.indiegogo.com for financing!
Best of Luck!
I always figured kickstarter would reject me, but maybe not… and I hadn’t heard of the other, thanks!
I love this a lot. For all you runners out there, this website: http://www.halhigdon.com/ has great training guides for novices and advanced. I found it very helpful!
As for my goal, like some others on here, I want to open an Etsy shop! It’s overwhelming. If anyone has advice on what to focus on in the beginning, it’d be greatly appreciated.
Contact: interestoverload@gmail.com
I have a lot of goals but mostly they are about getting my shit together and are therefore things I need to get on and do myself.
I am however more than happy to pimp myself out, I have fab organisational/research skills and am also a seasoned international solo traveller, so if anyone thinks these are attributes that could help them out send me an email and I’ll get straight back to you.

I just looked at your site and it looks like you go to Manistee a lot! My fiance’s family lives there and we went for a week in August and I loved it!!! He talks about it nonstop and we’ll likely be taking a bunch more trips throughout the year.
I bought a wonderful new Nikon camera for a big trip this summer and never really learned how to use it. I’d love to learn! morgan(dot)ives(at)gmail.com
Sounds great Morgan …..friend me on fb oe email me let’s chat
Check out http://matadoru.com/ !
They offer epic 3month online courses on travel photography, you will get your hands on invaluable resources and get massive opportunities for exposure. I’m only waiting for them to launch their travel filmmaking program!
Fantastic ivy. Will check them out now
My goal has always been to be a teacher, now, approaching a year after graduation I am a substitute teacher (enjoying it), but would love a full time job; I am middle/high school certified in English. I am planning to relocate to the Seattle area come May/June and get a job there. I want a full time job so I love what I do all the time and don’t have to work weekends as a waitress just to pay the bills.
If anyone has any Seattle area teaching contacts that would be a lot of help!!
alexathomas27@gmail.com
This is such an amazing idea and I’ve actually been wanting some guidance.
I’m currently in my second year of college, and I’m not exactly sure what I want to do with my life yet. Even though I still have time before I graduate, I feel like it’s going to be here before I know it. My major is Communications with a minor in Psychology, and so far I’ve loved every class I’ve taken. But I don’t know what to do with it. I’ve always wanted to work with music maybe producing or finding new artists, but it’s terribly hard to get into that world. Basically I’d really like to do an internship. Any internship really, because I’m a firm believer that you’ll never know if you like something if you don’t try it. I’m basically completely lost and bored with my life and need a new challenge.
I’d also really love to travel! It’s always been a dream of mine to go anywhere! Any ideas on how to do this without racking up more student loans, and begging my father to pay for it? I’m really trying to do this on my own, because I’ve already driven him crazy with all my school bills.
Any suggestions would be great!
My email is barah0309@aol.com.
I’m also on Twitter @Sarahbuckleyx3
Look into a study/work abroad program. Most schools offer them, even if they aren’t advertised. They’re usually incredibly cheap (and there are often scholarships involved), and it’s one of the best ways to get to know a place. I did one in a tiny community in Italy a few years ago and it was truly an amazing, life-changing experience.
Not sure where you’re located so I can’t help you with specifics, but Googling “study abroad+undergrad+(your location)” should bring a bunch of stuff up.
If you don’t mind working abroad, check out http://www.helpx.net/ – they offer home stays all over the world, you get free losing & food for lending a hand in gardening, child care, building, creative stuff…
If you don’t know it yet: http://www.couchsurfing.com is invaluable.
My favorite travel resource website is http://matadornetwork.com and they offer incredible budget travel advice, like http://matadornetwork.com/notebook/how-to-travel-for-free/
And I’ve done a 9$ a day trip through North America (Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, Road trip) last year, I’m gonna write an ebook on how I did that someday. If you wanna read my blog, http://www.disposablehomes.blogspot. com
Awesome! Thank you guys so much!! This is very helpful!
)
I want to start blogging. I recently moved 65oo miles away from home and everyone has been asking if I plan on blog-ing it. I wasn’t going to because this isn’t some fancy vacation, it is real life but then I realized that people blog real life. More specifically, I want to have the kind of inspirational, uplift everybody and uplift myself kind of blog that will help me impress the HR department where I will be applying for a job (dream job) next year. Suggestions?
samantha(dot)normandin(at)gmail(dot)com
very easy to make happen! use wordpress.com or blogger.com to get started.
Like Suki said, wordpress and blogger can both start out free – highly recommend! The best thing I did to become a better blogger was to read other blogs. Nicole’s friend Jamie has a great blog in which she did something similar (moved from Cali to Paris) and I recommend it. http://www.alifeintranslation.com/ Find your voice and go!
I’m moving to DC in a few weeks and I’m petrified. I’m staying with a friend in Baltimore for a few months but in situations where I feel uncomfortable, I tend to become a hermit. I’d really like to explore the city, make friends, be able to enjoy the great parts about being in a big city instead of being intimidated by the bad parts. I like coffee, wine, cheese, and chocolate and I promise I’m not a serial killer!
A good friend of mine just moved to DC herself. When you get there, let me know. I can do an email intro and maybe you guys will hit it off!
